Skipton and Clitheroe Poultry Auctions

PostDateIcon Wed, 21/10/2009 - 20:01 | PostAuthorIcon Julian

It was a busy weekend of chicken auctions that has just gone by.  The Skipton catalogue didn't look that great, neighbor Anthony had just a couple of lots in, prices had picked up though which is good.  The Clitheroe poultry catalogue looked quite good, a large amount of entries with an interesting cross section of breeds.  My friend and quality breeder of Ixworths, John Davenport had a pair of Ixworths in the sale, so I will be interested to se what they made at the sale.  My darling wife had gone a way for the weekend to a health spar so I decided to take the kids and go over to my parents near York and sort out all their stock of chickens.  With winter closing in, I decided to move the Ixworths inside where they seem far happier and I can get some early eggs for incubation and sale. Ixworth eggs are at a premium in the early winter months both for myself and the ever growing waiting list.  My breeding pen selections have now been made and I know which birds I will put on which for the coming breeding season.  A slight mishap with an over-eager fox has resulted in me having fewer laying birds for the coming season, but at least the quality is there.  With a few dinner parties coming up over the next few weeks I took the opportunity of killing a few surplus cockerals for the table, nothing beats an Ixworth chicken for the table.

Hi

I recently bought hatching eggs from your friend John Davenport. Only 4 hatched from 12 and of  the four I hatched two died after 4weeks quite suddenly. I only have two left and am worried I am going to lose them. One has a blue tinge to the leg as if cold. They are still indoors but have recently come off the heat lamp. I hope you can help.

Thanks, Sean
