York Livestock Centre Poultry Sale

PostDateIcon Mon, 05/10/2009 - 18:09 | PostAuthorIcon Julian

Having left Bolton Abbey at some ungodly hour after catching my 5 lots of birds and then going onto my next door neighbor, Anthony's house to collect him and his 8 lots of my birds, my car was rather full.  We were probably the first there which suits me as it gives you chance to settle your birds in without the crowds, and avoids the queue to get a buyers number.  With about 750 lots, we knew it was going to be a busy sale, but surprisingly it didn't seem as busy as normal.  I was quite happy with a red card for quality breeder on my trio of Indian Game, whilst Anthony was over the moon with a yellow and red card (best in breed and quality breeder respectively) for a trio of Silver Pencilled Wyandotte bantams.  The sale got off to a slow start, despite the best efforts of the very good and funny auctioneer, it just wasn't the normal rugby scrum associated with York.  An abundance of Orpingtons and Light Sussex went for what I classed as a poor price, I feel next year prices will go up as I don't think people will breed as many! A red or yellow card lifted prices so happily my trio of Indian Game went for £75, a good trio of Old English Pheasant Fowl went for £65, whilst some young birds made not very good money at all.  A pair of my Australorp Large Fowl which I have never seen at a York auction made a miserable £25, and Anthony's Wyandottes achieved £50.  All in all considering how quite the auction was, we were quite happy with the prices for our birds.
